Make a "SRTM download" application
Mantis Issue 319, reported by jmalik, assigned to ghost, created: 2011-05-26
We could make a application taking an input image as parameter, which create an output directory containing the SRTM tiles corresponding to the input image.
The tiles are available here : http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM3/
The naming convention comes from the lon/lat of the lower left corner of each tile.
-> we should be able to
- compute the WGS84 coordinates of the corners
- deduce the needed tile(s)
- download them
- unzip them all in the same directory
- create the necessary ".omd" for ossim to be able to work with it.
This would lower down the burden of finding the tiles corresponding to a specific product, downloading the files individually and tweaking a .omd file for each one.
The tricky part is to know the continent (tiles are in five different directories on the server, depending on the continent), but I guess once the file name is guessed, we could test the five possible address for file availability

- the omd are created automatically by ossim (I never had to create them)
- unzipping could be done in memory
- might be better to handle this at the ossim level? (had a dem format which is 'online SRTM')
1306427470 - julienm- ok for the omd, I did not know that (I never tried to use a simple hgt)
- handling this at the ossim level would be great. still, I would first make this simple app (I was even thinking about a simple python/bash script once the four WGS84 corners are computed)

1323191014 - christopWe already have this, shown in http://blog.orfeo-toolbox.org/preview/outside-the-box-otb This case is the hillshaded tiles (that's one more step than the raw DEM), This is fully tiled and all available in the server in /var/www/tile/hillShade
we could add the raw altitude values easily for the whole world (at SRTM resolution,
