Increase default value of ram parameter?

Maybe it is time to increase the default ram usage value: OTB_MAX_RAM_HINT environment variable and -ram parameter. Currently it's 128MB, and most users do not overwrite it because they don't know it exists or how to set it. What are the implications in terms of performance for typical use cases? Any benchmarks? How should it be set for best performance is unclear from the documentation alone.
